Who I Teach

Harp Lessons at Stone Oak Harp Studio

I believe in setting a solid and well-rounded foundation in music for all of my students. I carefully balance my lessons to cover:

WHAT I Teach

  • note reading skills
  • rhythm development
  • listening skills
  • theory practice
  • technique development
  • musicality
  • creativity and composition
  • ensemble skills

Young students enjoy my fun, positive, and forgiving approach to learning! I cater individually to each student’s needs, and craft specific and attainable lesson goals. I provide them with the step-by-step instruction they need to support a feeling of accomplishment. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to instill a lifelong love for music and learning!

In addition to using modern method books to build a solid music foundation, I focus on maximizing the fun factor from the very start, through a gamified and creative learning approach. I have a full library of games and activities where students practice and play with music theory concepts, aural skills, rhythm, composition, and improvisation. In my experience, this style of learning leads to a fuller retention rate and students looking forward to their lessons!

Teaching Philosophy & Approach

Students will receive a 60 minute group session, covering technique, theory, aural skills, improvisation, and ensemble pieces. Space is limited to only 4 students per group. This lesson format is recommended for young beginner students, ages 7-9.

Group Lessons

Students will receive a 30 minute one-on-one lesson, covering technique and solos. The individual session is followed by an overlapping 30 minutes with a buddy. During that time we work on theory, aural skills, duets, and improvisation. This lesson format is recommended for young beginner students, ages 10-13.

Buddy Lessons

Students will receive a weekly 45 minute private lesson. We work on technique, solos, theory, aural skills, duets, and improvisation.

Individual Lessons

Lesson Options

Buddy and group lessons encourage and motivate students in a fun and social environment! And it's this environment which I believe can instill a lifelong love for music and all the benefits that come along with it.

My studio operates on a tuition basis, with monthly payments starting at $150.

Performance Opportunities

Two Studio Masterclasses and a formal Studio Recital are held each year for students to have the opportunity to perform solo and ensemble music for family and friends. All performances are in a relaxed and supportive environment for students to build their confidence in performance and musicianship.

Nancy, 2019

"Sonja has a lot of patience for beginning harp players. She offers a good mix of “performance” pieces and exercises to keep the practices (and lessons!) both fun and moving in the right direction! After watching me play for only a few minutes, Sonja has the distinct ability of being able to determine where and how I can instantly improve, which she always offers in a positive, constructive format. Sonja makes me feel like I can conquer any piece. I would highly recommend Sonja to anyone considering harp lessons!!”

Sonja’s enthusiasm for the harp and for music, in general, is contagious!
